Global Warming | Podcast #138
Despite the undeniable evidence of global warming, neither of the 2012 American presidential candidates made climate change a top priority in their plans to run the country. In President Obama’s victory speech, however, he did have this to say:
“We want our children to live in an America that isn’t burdened by debt, that isn’t weakened up by inequality, that isn’t threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet.”(See full transcript of President Obama’s victory speech.) This speech was delivered just one week after Hurricane Sandy, a storm so strong that it put campaign trails on pause at a crucial time before the election. Will this devastating superstorm be enough to put climate change back on the American agenda?
This week’s mini-podcast offers an audio preview of our NEW Discussion Starters lesson plan on Global Warming. In the corresponding lesson plan, students complete vocabulary review exercises and comprehension questions based on the reading. They also take part in a discussion about the melting sea ice in the Arctic, and the responsibilities of developing and developed countries and their governments. View our entire Discussion Starters section, and share your suggestions for future topics.
