Podcast: Emoji (Int)
“With its poodles, noodles, and happy poos, Emoji is now the fastest-growing language in the UK.”
—Jonathan Jones, journalist
Today’s podcast features a reading from our intermediate Discussion Starters lesson about Emoji. In this podcast, learners listen to an article about the history and usage of emoji. The related lesson includes discussion questions that will get your students talking about emoji diversity and the evolution of language. This lesson also includes a group challenge.
To see the full transcript and use the ready-made lesson plan in class, log in to ESL Library and choose the Emoji lesson from our Discussion Starters section.
Note: Emoji is a word that is borrowed from Japanese. In English, the acceptable plural is “emoji” or “emojis.” We recently added an entry in our in-house style guide about loanwords and have decided to use “emoji” as the plural in our materials. Our lesson also contains the word “sushi,” which will help teachers explain this style choice.
